What it means
An earthquake shakes the ground you stand on, so it mirrors a big change or a foundation being tested — in work, family, or your own sense of stability. In the older tradition a great quake that clears the old ground can even precede a fresh start; the tremor unsettles you, but it can also make room for something new to be built.

- Read as a foundation being tested and holding, which the old books counted as reassurance rather than warning.
- Buildings came down
- Read as clearing rather than ruin. A great quake that overturns old ground was read as the space being made for a new start.

- Read as naming what matters to you. The old reading asked what you reached for, because that was the answer.
- It happened before a big change
- The most common timing, and the reason the symbol reads calmly. It usually arrives before the turn, not after the damage.
