Today's pillar and your day master

Only two things are being compared on this page. One is the pillar the day itself carries; the other is the heavenly stem of the day pillar in your chart, which we call the day master. There is a separate tool on this site that gives a colour, digits and a direction for the day — that one answers what to carry. This one answers how the day meets you. They are different questions, and they are worked out differently.

Today's pillar is read straight off the calendar from the date. The code hands the calendar noon on that date and sets the day boundary to midnight — the same setting the chart engine is built with — then reads back the day's stem and branch. No birth details go into it at all. On a given date every reader has the same pillar.

The line printed directly under the date on the result screen is made from that pillar and nothing else. It names the element of today's stem first and the element of today's branch second. Since no part of your chart reaches it, every reader sees the same line on the same date: it describes which two energies the day is made of, and is not a verdict on the day.

The date itself is today in the timezone you entered, not the date on our server. That is when the reading turns over — midnight where you are, not midnight where we are.

The day master is a single character: the stem of your day pillar. Each of the ten stems belongs to one of the five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — and that element is all this page uses of it. When the birth time is unknown the hour pillar is left out of the chart, but the day pillar remains, so this one character still stands.

That day pillar does not come from the birth date alone. The form above carries an optional box for fine-tuning the birth time. Tick it and the engine moves the birth instant before reading the day pillar — by the gap between a representative longitude for the timezone you chose and that zone's standard meridian, plus the seasonal equation of time. For a birth close enough to midnight that shift crosses into the neighbouring date, and then the day pillar, the day master and the whole reading resting on it are different ones. Three things gate it: the box has to be ticked, a birth time has to have been entered, and we have to hold a longitude for that timezone. With the time unknown nothing is shifted and the chart is read at noon, so the day master cannot move.

Turning the relation into a number

The day master's element is set against each of the two characters of today's pillar. There are only five possible relations, and each carries a score. Same element, plus two. Today's element generates yours, plus two. Yours generates today's, plus one. Today's element controls yours, minus two. Yours controls today's, minus one.

Those five numbers are ours. Nothing in the calendar decides that being fed should weigh more than feeding, or that being controlled should weigh more than controlling. We chose them, so they are written here rather than buried.

The score from the stem is doubled and the score from the branch added to it; that sum is the day. There is no arithmetic reason for the factor of two either — it is another number we picked. The sum can only fall between minus six and plus six.

The sum decides the five levels that head the page. Six or more is the brightest, three or more the next, zero or more a steady day, minus three or more a day to pause and notice, anything below that a day for gentle growth. Those four thresholds are the whole rule; there is nothing else behind them. Note that the brightest level is out of reach unless the stem and the branch both score plus two.

The four panels, and how the sentences are chosen

The four panels read the same material from different angles. Love and relationships uses the stem score alone, work and money the branch score alone, mind and body the combined sum, and what to watch takes whichever of the stem and branch scored lower. The last one exists so that a harsh half is not cancelled out by a supportive half in the sum.

Each score is then read as one of three tones: friendly at plus two or above, friction at minus two or below, neutral in between. Each panel prints one sentence for its tone.

It is worth being plain about the sentences: they are not divined. Three fixed sentences are held for every combination of panel and tone, and which of the three appears is a remainder over three, taken from a number hashed out of one string: the stem and branch of each pillar in your chart, then the date, then the name of the panel itself. The panel's name is on the end deliberately — without it all four panels would land on the same one of the three. The pillars in that string are four when your birth time is known and three when it is not, because the hour pillar was never built.

The closing suggestion is a remainder over five, taken from that same string with the word advice standing in for a panel name. The summary under the heading is not drawn separately at all: it is that closing number folded down into one of the two summaries kept for the level, so a given closing line always arrives with the same summary. What the calculation decides is the tone and the level, not the phrasing — so there is no meaning to read into which wording came up.

There is one benefit to choosing it that way. The same chart on the same date always produces the same sentences; reloading is not a re-draw. The result is kept in your browser against the date, the language and the details you entered, so opening the page again the same day returns the same reading.

Today's element, and how much weight to give it

The element offered as today's luck follows the same tone. On a friction day it is the element that generates your day master — water for wood, wood for fire, fire for earth, earth for metal, metal for water. On a friendly day it is the element of today's stem. On any other day it is the day master's own element. The colour and the direction are read off that single element rather than chosen separately: wood east, fire south, earth centre, metal west, water north, with one fixed colour name per element that does not change from day to day.

This can disagree with the element named by the colour tool on this site, and the disagreement is not a fault. What that tool works from is the element balance already computed for your chart — a percentage in which every visible character counts two and every hidden stem one. It shrinks that balance to eight parts in ten, hands the remaining two parts to today's stem and today's branch, and returns whichever element is lightest afterwards. The eight and the two are a share of weight we chose, not a count of characters. This page returns an element from the relation between your day master and the day instead. Different questions, different answers.

This is a calculation, not a prediction. All it uses is the pillar the calendar assigns to today and the single character of your day master. The rest of your chart only feeds the number that selects a sentence — it moves neither the tone nor the level — and the luck cycle does not enter this page at all.

So a heading for the day is about as much as this deserves to be read as. It is not guessing what happens to you today, and we would not claim it could.
