Which four digits are read, and what they become

Everything that is not a digit is stripped out of what you type, and four digits are read from what is left. An eleven-digit number beginning 010, 090, 080 or 070 is read on its middle four; anything else is read on its last four. One case is handled before that. A string longer than eleven digits that begins 81 or 82 followed by one of those mobile prefixes has the two country-code digits replaced by a single 0, so the same mobile number reads the same way whether or not you typed the code. Nothing else is rewritten — a landline typed with its country code keeps it, and is read on its last four as it stands. An entry with fewer than four digits is dropped, by the form and by the engine both. Whichever four were read are printed beside each candidate in the results, so you can see the block that was scored.

Each of the four is turned into an element: 1 and 2 are wood, 3 and 4 fire, 5 and 6 earth, 7 and 8 metal, 9 and 0 water. The engine calls this correspondence by its Korean name, 수리오행, and that table is the whole of it. It is a convention we adopted rather than something derived, so it is printed here instead of left implicit.

Up to ten candidates can be compared at once. Two numbers written differently but reading to the same four digits come back with the same result, because the calculation never sees anything else.

Why the same number ranks differently for different people

There is no eighty-one-number table anywhere in the code behind this page. Nothing here gives a number a fortune of its own: the digit table above is the only table there is, and it produces nothing at all until a chart is on the other side of it. Without a day master to read against, the ranking does not run.

So the number is not scored on its own. A number scored on its own gives every person holding it the same result. Each candidate is judged against your chart instead: the chart is read first for what it welcomes and what it already carries too much of, and only then are the four digits checked against that. The one piece shared with the rest of this site is the 抑扶 verdict — lightly supported, balanced, strongly supported — which the chart engine works out once and every page reads. What is done with that verdict here, the rule below, belongs to this page alone. That is why one set of four digits can rank first for you and last for someone else.

The day master is the stem of the day you were born. The weight supporting it is three things added together: what the chart carries in the day master's own element and in the element that generates it; a bonus for the season of birth, eight when the month's season is the day master's own element and five when that season generates it; and three for each pillar rooted in the day master's element. That sum is divided by the five-element total with those same two bonuses added into the denominator, so it is not the plain element percentage shown on /methodology and cannot be reproduced from it. Sixty percent or more is read as a strongly supported chart, under forty as a lightly supported one, in between as balanced. A lightly supported chart welcomes the element that generates the day master and the day master's own element, and eases off the element the day master controls and the element that controls it. A strongly supported chart welcomes three instead: what the day master generates, what it controls, and what controls it — easing off its own element and the one that feeds it. A balanced chart welcomes whichever two elements it has least of and eases off the one it has most of.

Without a birth time the chart is built from three pillars rather than four, so the same candidates can come back in a different order once a time is given.

The score is three additions and nothing else

Every candidate starts at 50 and only three things move it. How the number sounds, or how easy it is to remember, is not among them.

Fit. A digit carrying the element the chart welcomes most is worth three. Every other welcomed element is worth two a digit — a strongly supported chart welcomes three elements, and the second and the third are both scored at that same two. A digit carrying an element the chart already has too much of takes two away.

Flow. The four digits are read in order. Each adjacent pair where the first element generates the second adds one, and each pair where either controls the other takes one away. Pairs of the same element are skipped. Two numbers can hold exactly the same elements and still read differently, depending on the order they fall in.

Concentration. Four digits of a single element takes three away, three of one element takes one away, and three or more distinct elements adds one. The deduction stands even when the repeated element is the one the chart wants. Take 9999 on a chart that welcomes water first: all four digits score at the top fit rate, twelve points, and because the flow rule skips pairs of the same element, four identical digits cannot earn a single point of flow. Without the concentration deduction that number lands on 86 of a possible 96; with it, on 77. That gap is the whole of what the rule is for.

The three are added together, multiplied by three, added to 50 and clamped between 6 and 96. That multiplier and that starting point are numbers we chose, and they are written here rather than buried.

The labels follow from the score alone. Every number tied at the top score is called the best match, provided that score is at least 58 — calling one of two identical scores best and the other merely good is not something we could defend. Below the top, 64 and above suits you, 42 and above is neutral, and anything lower is not ideal. If the top score never reaches 58, nothing is called a best match. Ties are broken on the number with more distinct elements first, then on the smoother flow.

How much weight to give it

This is a calculation, not a prediction. A phone number does not cause money, health, accidents or love, and we will not tell you otherwise. The one thing worked out here is which way the elements of four chosen digits move a balance your chart already has.

The ranking on this free page uses no language model — a table and some arithmetic. A language model runs only for the paid reading, and only once the purchase has been checked. So the same birth details with the same candidates return the same scores in the same order, every time you ask. There is no difference in it we cannot account for.

Only four digits are read, so the rest of the number never enters the score. The honest use for this is the one it was built for: a way of settling a choice among candidates that are all perfectly fine.
