What today's pillar is

A day has a pillar of its own, in the same way the moment you were born does. Ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches are paired off in order, so the cycle closes after sixty days and the sixty-first day brings the same pair back. This is not divined — it is the calendar's own name for the date, which is why anyone who calculates it gets the same answer.

That name is what the day carries. Each of the two characters is assigned to one of the five elements: a 甲 or 乙 stem is wood, a 巳 or 午 branch is fire, and so on.

Why the answer changes daily

A chart is eight characters — a stem and a branch for each of the four pillars of year, month, day and hour. How the five elements sit unevenly across those eight is the leaning you were born with.

Today's two characters are added to them. Two against eight, so the day carries one fifth of the balance — that split is a number we chose, and it is written here rather than buried. Count the elements again with the day included, and whichever is now the lightest is what today is asking for.

Change the day and you change the two characters added, so you change which element ends up lightest. That is what makes the answer daily rather than a standing fact. It also means the same chart gives different answers on different days, and different charts give different answers on the same day — which is why the form asks for a birth date.

Where the colour, numbers and direction come from

All three are read off the element being asked for. None of them is written for the occasion.

The direction is the five-point compass: wood east, fire south, earth centre, metal west, water north. The colour comes from the five cardinal colours. The numbers come from a table assigning each single digit to an element — the same table the phone-number reading uses — returning the two digits that carry it.

So on a day short of water you get north, the blacks and blues, and one and six. The colour is not picked first and justified afterwards.

How much weight to give it

This is a calculation, not a prediction. It works out one thing mechanically: how today's pillar moves the balance of elements in your chart. It is not guessing whether the day goes well, and we would not claim it could.

It is best used the way it reads — as a way of choosing between options that are all fine. One shirt, one seat. It is not built to carry a decision heavier than that.
