It depends
Bird
What it means
A bird is a messenger and a symbol of freedom. A bird flying into your home or landing near you often brings news, a guest, or good tidings; a bright bird singing is an especially cheerful sign. A caged or injured bird points to a wish held back — a gentle cue to give yourself more room to move.
It depends how it appeared
The same symbol is read differently depending on what happened in the dream.
- A bird flew into the house
- The clearest good form. Read as news or a visitor arriving; a bird crossing the threshold was the message, not the bird.
- A bird landed on your hand or shoulder
- Read as the news being for you specifically, rather than for the household. A smaller reading, and a warmer one.
- The birds were singing
- Read as the news being good. The old books separated the arrival from the content, and song was how they marked the content.
- The bird was caged or hurt
- Read as a wish you have kept small on purpose. The advice attached was to give yourself more room, not to change the wish.
- The bird flew away
- Read as timing rather than loss: a piece of news that has not landed yet, and that the old reading said would come round again.
