Unlock a PDF — remove the password, no upload

Remove the password from a PDF you know the password to, and save a copy that opens straight away. PDFs with printing or copying turned off are freed too. The file is handled inside your browser and is not sent anywhere. This page does not find out passwords.

How to use it

  1. Press “Choose a PDF”, or drop the file onto the box. The page checks how it is locked and says so under the name.
  2. If it asks for a password, type it and press “Unlock”. If it opens without one but has restrictions, press “Remove the restrictions”.
  3. The PDF without a password downloads straight away, named like statement-unlocked.pdf.

If something goes wrong

  • If the password is wrong, a message shows and you can type it again. The page does not try passwords for you.
  • The original file is not changed; a new copy is saved.

The content is left as it is; only the password and the restrictions are removed. A file whose password you do not know cannot be unlocked here.

How the unlock worksHow this works

Your file and password stay on your device

The PDF you choose is read by this page inside your browser, and the password is removed there by qpdf, a free PDF program, running in the page. This tool has no upload step and no server route. The password you type is used for that one run and is not saved or sent.

You do not have to take that on trust. Open the page, switch off Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and unlock: it still works. The line under the result also counts the network requests made while unlocking.

Two kinds of lock

A PDF can be locked in two ways. One asks for a password before it opens: for that, the page needs the password, and it opens the file only with what you type. The other opens freely but has printing, copying or editing turned off: no password is needed, and the copy is saved without those restrictions.

The page checks which kind it is as soon as the file is chosen and says so under the file name. A PDF with no lock at all is named as such and can be used as it is.

What you get

A copy of the same document without encryption, named after the original, such as statement-unlocked.pdf. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept; only the password and the restrictions are removed. The original file is not changed.

If the PDF was digitally signed, the signature no longer checks out in the unlocked copy, because the file is written anew. Keep the original when the signature matters.

What it cannot do

It does not find out passwords and does not try any for you. If you do not know the password, ask whoever sent the file. A damaged file or a file that is not a PDF is named and not unlocked.

The work is done by your device, so a very large file on an older phone can take a while. Nothing is kept after you close the page.

Quick questions

Are my PDF and password uploaded anywhere?

No. This page reads the file and removes the password inside your browser, and there is no server step for this tool. You can test it yourself: open the page, switch off your internet connection, then unlock. It still works. The line under the result also counts the network requests made while unlocking.

I do not know the password. Can this page find it?

No. A PDF that needs a password is opened only with the password you type, and the page does not try others. If you do not know it, ask whoever sent you the file.

A statement PDF asks for its password every time. Can I save it without one?

Yes. Choose the file, type its password once and press Unlock. The copy you get opens without a password; the original file is left as it was.
