Number the pages at the bottom or top, in the corner or the middle, starting from any number, with the cover left blank if you like. The file is handled inside your browser and not sent anywhere.
The numbers are written onto the pages as text in a standard PDF font. Everything else in the file — text, pictures, links, forms, bookmarks — stays as it was.
How it worksHow this works
Your file stays on your device
The PDF is read and written inside your browser by pdf-lib, and the preview is drawn there by pdf.js, the PDF reader built into Firefox. There is no upload step and no server route; the result goes straight to your downloads.
How the numbers are written
Each number is written onto its page as text, in Helvetica, one of the standard fonts every PDF reader carries, so no font is added to the file and the numbers stay sharp at any zoom and can be searched. Nothing else is touched: the text, pictures, links, fillable forms and bookmarks are saved as they were.
Where they go
The position is worked out on the page as you see it. A scanned page that the file turns on its side still gets its number at the bottom as you read it, and a page that was trimmed gets it inside the part that shows. The number sits about 1 cm from the edge, which is inside the margin most printers leave.
Pages of different sizes in one file each get the number in the same place relative to their own edges.
First number and the cover
Numbering can start from any number, which helps when the file continues a longer document. With the cover left out, the first page stays blank and numbering begins on page 2 with your first number. The “3 / 10” style counts to the last number written, so a skipped cover does not make the total look one too many.
When it helps
A stack of papers for an application or a tender is easier to check when every page carries a number, and a printed copy that gets dropped goes back in order. Merge the parts first with Merge PDFs, then number the whole file once.
Limits
A PDF with a password or restrictions cannot be written, so it is sent to Unlock a PDF first. The labels are digits only. If the pages already have numbers printed on them, check the preview and pick another corner so the two do not overlap.
No. The file is read, shown and saved inside your browser; this tool has no server step. To draw some pages the preview may fetch character maps or fonts from this site, never your file.
Can I leave the cover page without a number?
Yes. Tick the box for the first page and numbering starts on page 2, with whatever first number you set. The “3 / 10” style then counts only the numbered pages.
Does anything else in the file change?
No. Only the numbers are added. The text, pictures, links, fillable forms and bookmarks stay as they were, and nothing is recompressed.
