Quick questions
How is take-home pay calculated on a US salary in 2026?
Federal income tax withholding (IRS Publication 15-T, for a 2020-or-later Form W-4) and FICA come out of the salary: Social Security at 6.2% up to $184,500 and Medicare at 1.45%. What is left is shown for the year, a month and a two-week paycheck (26 a year).
Does this paycheck calculator include state income tax?
No. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax (IRS, 2023); in other states it comes on top of these figures.
How do dependents on Form W-4 change my withholding?
Step 3 of the 2026 Form W-4 takes $2,200 off the year's withholding for each child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent, for income up to $200,000 ($400,000 filing jointly).
Is the amount withheld the tax I actually owe?
No. It is what is withheld; your tax return settles the difference. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k) and the W-4 deductions for tips or overtime lower the withholding and are not included here.
