US passport photo rules

2 × 2 inches; 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.

A white or off-white background with no shadows or pattern; in colour; taken in the last 6 months.

No glasses since 1 November 2016 (a signed doctor's note is needed if they cannot come off for medical reasons), no sunglasses, and no filters or AI edits.

Online renewal takes a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file of 54 KB to 10 MB. The passport rules give a file size, not a pixel size; this page saves 600 × 600 px, 2 × 2 inches at 300 dpi. The 600–1200 px square rule is for visa photos.

The background is not changed, so take the photo in front of a plain white wall. The issuing office decides whether a photo is accepted; this page only sets the size and position.
