Quick questions
How is overtime calculated for hourly workers?
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Federal law does not require daily overtime or extra pay for nights, weekends or holidays.
How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply the week's pay by 52 for the year; a month is the week × 52 ÷ 12. At $15 an hour for 40 hours, that is $600 a week and $31,200 a year, before tax.
What is the federal minimum wage in 2026?
$7.25 an hour, unchanged since July 24, 2009. Where a state has no minimum wage law, or a lower one such as Georgia's and Wyoming's $5.15, an employer covered by federal law pays $7.25.
Which state has the highest minimum wage?
In the Department of Labor table updated July 1, 2026, the District of Columbia is highest at $18.40 an hour, then Washington at $17.13, Connecticut at $16.94 and California at $16.90. City rates and rises after July 1 are not in that table.
