Public holiday Long weekend Take this day off

  • Fri Jan 1 New Year's Day
  • Mon Jan 18 Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Longest break: Fri Jan 1 – Sun Jan 3, 3 days.

How the days are worked out

These are the eleven federal holidays (5 U.S.C. 6103). A holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before and one on a Sunday the Monday after; the calendar shows the day off.

Federal holidays are the days off of federal employees. Private employers set their own, and states add holidays of their own, so check your workplace's list.

How to use it

  1. Pick the year at the top. From October the page opens on next year.
  2. Each month tile shows its longest break. Darker tiles are the good months for a trip: a break of five days or more, or one you can reach with one day of leave.
  3. Press a month to see its calendar: public holidays in red, the long weekend shaded, and the day worth taking off marked.

If something goes wrong

  • “+1 leave” counts one working day of annual leave next to the holidays, the usual way to stretch a long weekend.
  • Temporary holidays are added once the government announces them.
